Contemporary Japanese Fashion: The Mary Basket Collection

Originally exhibited at the Cincinatti Art Museum, Contemporary Japanese Fashion: The Mary Basket Collection has opened at Washington D.C.’s Textile Museum in expanded form. Ms. Basket is former prints curator at the Cincinatti Art Museum, and since the 1960s has been collecting and wearing high Japanese fashions. The pieces drawn from her collection focus on the avant-garde Japanese tradition formulated in the 1970s by designers like Issey Miyake (whose work is above) and Yohji Yamamoto. The exhibit argues that these folks helped to overthrow existing norms and enact the postmodernist movement in fashion.
