Set to open in 2010, the Peace Bridge will span the Bow River in Calgary, Canada. The bridge will primarily serve walking and cycling commuters. Santiago Calatrava brings a sculptural feel to the structure, using the tubular design as a solution to constructional difficulty. The highly technical bridge will have separate lanes for cyclists and walkers, making life a little easier regardless of the type of commute. (via archdaily).

More views of the Peace Bridge after the jump.

  1. Mr. TILLER:

I am surprised this bridge has no support or legs into the river. If the river banks erode or soften on one side (due to heavy rain for example) the bridge can go on the wonk longitudinally, roll axially or even pivot.

  2. Jackson:

Not my absolute favorite of his designs, but I love to see him incorporating color. It’s nice to see yet another footbridge, but I’m really craving something on a grander scale.

  3. Jackson:

Also, kinda looks like a Chinese finger trap.

  4. Mr.Tiller don\’t worry! I\’am sure Mr.Calatrava and his team calculated the best foundation solution. Maybe the bridge foot lay on plat with piles, depth some meters on soil characteristis with good strengh and deformability…. Santiago Calatrava is perfect architect and civil engeneer as well as great sculptor, the best ione in 21th centery ,according to my opinion.

  5. fify:

well im really amazed by this bridge but in other hand i always expect great things from santiago calatrava

  6. shashank:

Absolute wonder…i am sure the structural designers are going to have sleepless nights…No support in the middle!!!!!
Can it be designed like a telescopic channel…with supports at the banks of river and jetting like a telescope to meet in the middle?

Will keep guessing till the thing comes up…
    Need better solutions…….

  7. murali:

really nice to see this….. but this is not calatravas first attempt….. he had already designed some foot over bridges in spain of same module…… rib structure….. only difference is the color… those were in blue….. one can see lot of those while travelling from bilbao to zaragoza to barcelona……. on the outskirts of the cities…….. and the span was also not this much…….

    kudos calatrava………

  8. JAIME:

    bORING…

  9. einfach & genial

  10. Lindsey Standaert:

    that ’s …. Architecture !
one of the most beautiful bridges in the world…

  11. Abdulmueen Bogis:

This bridge is similar to construction of the human’s backbone. Maybe he abstracted it.

  12. Abdulmueen Bogis:

And also he maybe use the mathematical equations for construction of the spine to foundation the bridge .

  13. Eduardo:

    Very nice

  14. Selim pamuk:

it is so simple why it is so beautifull.

  15. This bridge is at the centre of a maelstrom of public discontent about government ineptness in Calgary. The bridge itself is unique, but now represents massive systemic incompetence & fraud/corruption in Calgary. Dubbed the Peace Bridge, It is now known as the Fleece Bridge for fraudulently sucking $25 million from citizens to build a ped bridge less than 300m from another ped bridge.
Again, I like the design, hate the process.

  16. anish:

i donno if the rib structure is able to balance itself without any ground supports…….i wanna know that are these ribs structure acting lik structural grids ….which are free from supports , self balancing members, transmitting loads thru joints…….??????

  17. Roberto:

Very nice bridge, but is diferent Calatrava´s works
