Every figure I’ve painted is a hero. They spit in the face of death every time they brush their teeth. Every bowl of cereal is poured in bold defiance, a swaggering mockery of entropy and fate. They wear the medals of glorious victory in the set of their jaws, the tilt of their hips, and the ink in their skin. Rejoice! We’re champions all.
Anthony Palumbo’s portraits are on view at Artists’ House, 57 N. 2nd Street, Philadelphia, to March 1, 2009.
